A number of people assumed that Nintendo is pulling another Wii U or gradually phasing out the 3DS by not releasing any new updates about the system. Although no new 3DS-related announcements were given in the recently concluded E3 2018 event, Nintendo of America President & COO Reggie Fils-Aimé stated that more games are coming to the 3DS and people should expect some announcements in the next couple of months.
Reggie elaborated this in his interview with IGN:
We're going to continue [focusing on the 3DS], we're going to continue to have some new games on that platform. We're going to announce [them], and we will over the next number of months, but it's going to continue to be a vibrant piece of our overall business, certainly here in the Americas.
Its continued success in the market was mentioned in the interview, citing an uptick in sales year-over-year in December 2017 and year-to-date so far in 2018 over 2017. The company also believes that the handheld is a great budget-friendly option with its library of over 1,000 games.
While Reggie did not clarify if the new upcoming titles will be first or third party, it is worth mentioning that the main Pokemon and Fire Emblem games will no longer make an appearance on the handheld unless other developers create spin-offs (eg: Fire Emblem Warriors). Etrian Odyssey X will also be the final iteration of the Etrian Odyssey franchise on the 3DS although it has yet to receive an official Western release.
Speaking of new updates, firmware version 11.7.0-40U for the 3DS family went live a few hours ago stabilizing the handheld's existence even further.
What do you think? As a 3DS owner, are you satisfied with their statement so far? As a Switch owner, would you rather have them invest solely on the Switch?
