A few days ago, the version 1.2 Update for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon were made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

This update is mandatory because you won't be able to utilize online and local multiplayer features (trade, battle, redeem event serial codes, etc) unless you download the said update. The only consequence is you won't be able to view or upload Battle Videos recorded prior to the update but game save data won't be affected. Update data will be saved on the SD Card that is inserted into the system.

Update Instructions
  • Be sure to have the latest 3DS firmware version first so you can access the eShop.
  • From the HOME Menu, launch the software you wish to update (Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon).
  • If an update is available, the text A software update is available will appear on the upper screen.
  • Select Update or press the Y Button to begin the update process.
    - If you do not wish to update the software, you can press the A Button to launch the software without updating.
  • Two options will be available: Download Now and View Details in Nintendo eShop and Then Download.
    - Download Now will allow you to immediately download the update in the foreground.
    - Do not turn off the system or remove the SD Card during the update process.
  • The latter option will allow you to view Details in the eShop.
    - From here, the software update can be performed immediately in the foreground.
    - Or you can choose the download later option to download the update while the system is in sleep mode.
Ver 1.2 fixes a number of bugs, mostly dealing with glitches in competitive play. Previously, the moves Curse, Forest's Curse, Power Trick, and String Shot were banned from official tournaments because they freeze up the game during live competitions. At the time of writing, the official VGC 2018 rule page has yet to update its Banned Moves section.
