When the new Switch Online Service goes live on September 18, access to online multiplayer features for most games will no longer be possible without a subscription. Only a number of games will be exempted.

The Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ reveals that many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch games like Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate require the aforementioned subscription but free-to-play games like Arena of Valor, Fornite, and Paladins can be played online without a membership.
Beginning September 18, 2018, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to participate in co-op and competitive online features for many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch games, including Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Some games, such as Fortnite, can be played online without a Nintendo Switch membership.

Additionally, Nintendo eShop, friend registration and management, sharing screen shots and video over social networks, parental controls, game software and system software updates, game news, and other service functionality will be available without becoming a Nintendo Switch Online member.
On the flipside, some games do require a double subscription such as in the case of Minecraft Realms service.

You can read more information about the Nintendo Switch Online Service through this link such as:
  • My Nintendo Gold Points can be used to purchase a membership in the Nintendo eShop but not for auto-renewal
  • Cloud save data will not be retained after an extended period of time when your membership expires.
  • The 2 Special Offers that are currently available are the Splatoon 2 DLC and the ability to purchase the NES Controller Joy Cons if you live in the US or Canada. The NES Controller is designed for use with NES - Nintendo Switch Online games and is not guaranteed to work with other software.
