Nintendo has released a new firmware update for all 3DS systems (Regular 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, and New 3DS XL). No, the 3DS is still region-locked and yes, the 3DS is more stable than ever!

Remember, your units need to be updated to the latest firmware to access the Nintendo 3DS eShop and other online features of certain games (some games like Pokemon require you to download their latest software patch from the eShop but you won't be able to access it in the first place if your firmware is outdated). In addition, some games won't let you communicate with other systems if you are outdated.

The new firmware updates which started from last February's 11.3.0-36U has caused multiple hacked units with custom firmware (CFW) to get the Black Screen of Death. This is possibly one of Nintendo's way of combating piracy on the 3DS.

Nintendo's official changelog reads:
Version 11.5.0-38U available via wireless Internet connection includes the following improvements:

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
How to Perform a System Update

1. Turn on your system and access the System Settings by tapping the wrench icon.

2. Tap "Other Settings."

3. Tap the right arrow three times to reach page 4.

4. Tap "System Update."

5. Tap "OK."

6. Tap "I Accept."

7. Tap "OK" to begin the update.

Troubleshooting
The following error message may pop-up while you are downloading the latest system update:

      An error has occurred.
      Unable to update.

The system will now be restarted.
The aforementioned error message is normal provided there are no Error Codes presented. Here are some simple steps that you can try. Some of these steps may or may not work for everyone:
  • Try and try until you d̶i̶e̶ succeed.
  • Try updating at a later time.
  • Use Google's DNS Settings in your system's Connection Settings (Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8 and Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4)
  • Use a different connection (eg: Globe mobile Hotspot).
  • Put your 3DS on Sleep Mode and hope for the best.
  • Pray.
