Nintendo posted an update yesterday regarding their Nintendo Switch Online service. While most fans were generally satisfied at the subscription prices, one of its features that received the controversial spotlight was its online lobby and voice chat system.

You see, accessories manufacturer HORI also revealed their Splatoon 2-themed headset designed to mix both audio outputs from in-game sounds and voice chat yesterday. They also provided a simple schematic for the setup that caught a few people off-guard:

The diagram showed that you need to connect both your Nintendo Switch and smartphone device to HORI's special Inkling-shaped splitter which later connects to their headset using, well, wires. Nintendo’s proposed voice chat system for the Switch will be done through a smartphone app, not on the Switch itself. HORI will attempt to optimize user experience through their headset but some people did not like the wires needed for their setup.

On the other hand, the headset does give you style points if you like the art featured in the game.

Nintendo has yet to reveal key features about their voice chat app. Of course, you can always plug a normal headset directly to your smartphone device and rely on the Switch or your Television's speaker systems for the in-game sounds.

HORI's Splatoon 2 headset will sell for ¥3,480 (around P1,555 excluding tax) and will come out at the same time as the game, on July 21, 2017. A free, limited version of Nintendo's voice chat app will be available for download sometime on 2nd or 3rd Quarter this year. While the headset was initially designed for Splatoon 2, it will still work for other Switch games such as Monster Hunter XX.

What are your thoughts regarding Nintendo's voice chat system?
